THE DALLES — Amy Thornquist (Pinnacle-Argon) and Logan Loader (CashCall Mortgage) each won the stage 2 Scenic Gorge Time Trial Saturday between The Dalles and Hood River and rode into the overall race lead as well.

The traditional course that runs along an historic highway in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area bid farewell to the stage race Saturday with a send-off in beautiful 80-degree weather and barely a hint of wind. The final running of Hood’s stage 2 race against the clock took place without the stiff headwinds that have made the Gorge a windsurfing capital of the world. Riders even got a bit of a boost from a slight tailwind in sections.

Thornquist covered the 31km course, which features 413 meters of climbing, in 47:32.05, just 21 seconds faster than runner-up Allison Tetrick (Exergy-TWENTY 16). Tetrick was also second last year with a time of 51:37. Thornquist’s winning time was nearly two and a half minutes faster than the winning mark set last year by Rhae Shaw. Molly Van Houweling (Metromint), Hood’s 2010 overall winner, set the third fastest time Saturday, 1:35 off Thornquist’s winning mark.

The time trial also set the order for the top of the women’s General Classification, with Thornquist leading Tetrick by 21 seconds and Van Houweling by 1:47.

Loader blew across the course in 41:20 to seal the men’s win and the overall lead. Marc Pro-Strava’s Justin Rossi was second fastest on the day, 39 seconds down, while CCB Racing’s Cameron Cogburn set the third best time another second back. Trek-Red Truck’s Craig Richey finished 1:16 down for fourth and was rewarded with second overall behind Loader. Hagens Berman’s Ian Crane rounded out the top five, finishing 1:24 down. Like the women’s race, the top five on the stage are also the top five in the overall, with only Richey slipping out of order and into second on GC.

The 2013 Mt. Hood Cycling Classic continues Saturday evening with the Downtown Hood River Criterium and concludes Sunday with the Three Summits Road Race.
