THE DALLES — Eric Riggs (Mike’s Bikes) and Anne Donley (Rise Above Racing) took the wins Friday during the opening stage of the 2013 Mt. Hood Cycling Classic.

Anne Donley will wear yellow Saturday morning for the women's time trial. ┬ęPat Malach/

Donley benefited from confusion at the tail end of the women’s race after a group of five leaders dangling off the front of the field were directed past the final turn to the finish and lost their slight advantage. Donley jumped away from the rest of the lead pack after 90km of racing and sprinted up the final kicker climb to take the win two seconds ahead of Anne Perry (K4-DNC Cycling), Courtney Lowe (Optum-Kelly benefit Strategies), Alison Tetrick (Exergy-Twenty 16) and Amy Thornquist (Pinnacle). Donley benefited from the 10-second time bonus for the win, while Perry and Lowe collected bonuses of eight and six seconds, respectively.

The men’s race was animated early when Rio Grande’s Kennett Peterson jumped away as the field rolled out of the parking lot for the 149km opening test. Seven more riders quickly joined Peterson and built a gap of just under a minute during the first of five loops around the 15 km course. The lead group swelled to 20 riders on lap two just before the second KOM, but the climb and sprint for points jettisoned five riders, leaving a group pf 15 off the front.

California Giant-Specialized had four riders in the breakaway, while Hagens Berman had just one. As Cal Giant pushed the pace in the break, Hagens Berman massed at the front of the field to take up the chase. The effort paid dividends for the black-and-blue Seattle team as the groups came back together to begin the final loop.

Another lead group of 10 sneaked away on the final lap and built a lead of about 50 seconds, but repeated attacks from Cal Giant’s Robin Eckmann and Stefano Barberi started breaking the leaders apart toward the end. Biding his time in the safety of the lead group, Riggs waited and then attacked at the bottom of the final kicker to the finish, opening a gap over Herriott Sports Performance’s Brian Hitchcock that he was able to hold to the line. Kit Recca (GS Ciao-Horizon Organic) crossed the line three seconds later for third, followed by Craig Richey (Trek Red Truck Racing-Mosaic Homes) and Steve Fischer (Hagens Berman).

Riggs collected the 10-second time bonus for the win, while Hitchock and Richey earned time bumps of eight and six seconds, respectively.

The 2013 Mt. Hood Cycling Classic continues Saturday with the Scenic Gorge Time Trial in the morning and the Downtown Hood River Criterium in the evening. The race Concludes Sunday with the Three Summits Road Race.
