Walle, Bedford win Rose Garden #2

Brianna Walle continued her early season good form with a win in front of Sue Butler at Thursday night's Rose Garden Circuit Race #2 in Portland.

PORTLAND — Stephen Bedford led a Team Oregon/Laurelwood Brewing sweep of the Senior men’s podium Thursday night to take his second consecutive Rose Garden Circuit Race in Washington Park, while Brianna Walle (Ironclad Performance Wear) out-sprinted Sue Butler (River City Bicycles) in the Senior women’s race for her first series win.

Stephen Bedford scored his second series win Thursday night.

Walle and Butler got away on the first lap, much like Butler’s escape with Hilary Billington (Veloce/Smith&Nephew) on her way to winning the first series race last week. But with Billington absent this week Walle filled in off the front with Butler, and things turned out differently this time for the mountain biking and cyclocross star from Portland.

Although the lead duo once again rode away with the race very early on, Walle’s superior sprint won the day as the two climbed into the false flat of the finishing straight.

“I was going to attack from the bottom of the hill,” Butler said. “But it would’ve hurt bad.”

Instead Butler waited until the last 200 meters to try and jump past Walle, the Oregon Cup leader who  recently won Piece of Cake on Saturday. Walle easily out-kicked Butler to take her first series win in as many tries.

Unlike the first series race, when he soloed away on the first lap and held on for the win, Bedford waited two laps to escape the bunch Thursday night. And this time he took teammates Christopher Dubois and Chris Swan, as well as Gentle Lovers’ Cary Miller, Hagens Berman’s Marcel DeLisser and Evolution Racing’s Tim Butler, along with him.

The leaders laid waste to the field, which quickly broke up into small groups that struggled to reestablish contact. As the laps closed down on the 45-minute race, the lead group started breaking up, with Bedford going off solo, followed in turn by Dubois and Swan, then DeLisser and Cary, and finally Butler. The order through the final laps carried through to the finish. Bedford soloed in for the win, followed by Dubois, who distanced himself from Swan on the last lap. Swan held of for third, followed by DeLisser and then Butler, who had overtaken Miller during the final circuit.
