BAKER CITY — Leia Tyrrell (Sorella Forte/St Honoré Bakery) won the morning time trial Saturday and took the overall lead at the Baker City Cycling Classic and then hung on for fourth in the evening criterium. She’ll go into the final stage in the leader’s jersey.

In the men’s overall race, Sam Krieg (ICE/Idaho Kidney Institute) and Erik Slack (Volkswagen Boise) continued their back-and-forth battle for the overall, with Krieg taking the stage 2 time trial and stealing the leader’s jersey from stage 1 winner Slack, followed by Slack’s win in the evening critetium and return to the race lead.

Krieg initially took the leader’s jersey from Slack after covering the time trial course in just 20:54, 20 seconds faster than runner-up Trevor Spahr (Ironclad Performance Wear) and 21 seconds better than third-placed Colin Joyce (Hot Tubes). Slack finished 1:05 down for 13th and dropped to second overall, but he didn’t have to wait long to slip the leader’s jersey back on.

In the criterium later that evening, he made it into a breakaway of eight riders that gained 1:15 on the field, then won the sprint for the stage win in front of Hugo Fregoso (Team Sandals Resorts) and Daniel Vasicheck (Northern Rockies Orthopedic). Krieg finished with the field for 20th and fell 10 seconds behind Slack for second in the overall battle. Guinness Cycling’s Evan Siroky is third overall, 3:16 behind.

Tyrrell took the leader’s jersey for the women by flying through the morning time trial, setting a mark of 23:22 over the 10-mile out-and-back course. Jane Despas (Sydney Cycling Club) came across the line 35 seconds slower for second, while Lisa Magness (Bend Memorial Clinic Total Care) came in nearly a minute down for third.

In the criterium Saturday evening, Bend Memorial Clininc Total Care’s Brenna Lopez-Otero won a three-up sprint ahead of River City Bicycles’ Sue Butler and Ironclad Performance Wear’s Anna Christiansen, while Tyrrell led the field home just two seconds later to take fourth and hold onto her overall lead by 35 seconds over Despas. Team Redline’s Kari Studley is third overall, 1:14 back.

The Baker City Cycling Classic concludes Sunday with the Tour d’Horn Road Race, which features nearly 6,000 feet of climbing over 101 miles and a summit finish on Dooley Mountain.
