Sheppard, Wilcoxson win Crusade opener

Jade Wilcoxson took her first-ever Cross Crusade win Sunday at Alpenrose Dairy, the first race of the 2012 series.

PORTLAND –Chris Sheppard (Rocky Mountain Bicycles) and road pro Jade Wilcoxson (Optum Pro Cycling) rode away with the first Elite men’s and women’s wins of the 2012 Cross Crusade series Sunday at Alpenrose Dairy in Southwest Portland.

Chris Sheppard won the Elite men's race in front of Barry Wicks.

Northwest Oregon’s record-breaking string of dry weather continued Sunday for the races at the pastoral headquarters of Alpenrose Dairy, the Southwest Portland home of Oregon’s only velodrome. The fast, sometimes-dusty course presented a few technical challenges for the riders in the Elite men’s and women’s race as they sailed through course at the same time, also sharing it with the Elite Masters men.

The men’s race came down to a duel on the front between Sheppard and fellow Bend resident Barry Wicks (Kona) before Sheppard finally surged ahead on the last lap for the win. Wicks overcame a coupe of bobbles on the course to hold on for second. Portland Bicycle Studio’s Molly Cameron finished third on the day after getting caught behind an early crash by Rabobank-Giant rider Adam Craig, who finished well outside the podium. Brand-new Bend resident Alex Candelario (Optum Pro Cycling) crashed late but held on for fourth.

In the women’s race, cyclocross newcomer Wilcoxson, arguably the best neo-pro in the domestic women’s road peloton this year, dueled with 2011 Cross Crusade overall winner Serena Bishop Gordon (Silverado Gallery/Sunnyside Sports) throughout most of the afternoon, following the Bend rider for much of the day and then opening a winning gap on the last lap to take her first-ever Cross Crusade victory. Alice Pennington (Kona) crossed the line for third, while Beth Ann Orton (Team S&M les Femmes) finished fourth.
