SUN PRAIRIE, Wisc. — Jeremy Powers (Rapha-Focus) and Katie Compton (Trek Cyclocross Collective) opened their accounts at the 2012 Trek US Gran Prix of Cyclocross with wins Saturday during day 1 of the series’ opening round at the Planet Bike Cup in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin.

Compton, the eight-time US national champion, left little doubt who was the strongest woman in the course Saturday, busting out of the pack on the first lap and never looking back again until she crossed the finish line for the win. Rapha-Focus riders Gabby Day and Julie Krasniak were first in line to pursue Compton, but Olympic mountain bike cross country bronze medalist Georgia Gould (Luna) eventually whipped past the Rapha riders to take second. Day held on for third, while Meredith Miller (Cal Giant-Specialized) moved into fourth ahead of Krasniak.

In the men’s race, Powers grabbed the hole shot and the initial lead, but nobody was able to establish control early on. The head of the race changed hands repeatedly, with Powers, Ryan Trebon (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com), Tim Johnson (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com), Jonathan Page and Lukas Fluckiger (Trek World Racing) engaged in most of the battling up front.

Trebon, Powers and Johnson separated from the rest about halfway through the 60-minute race and poured on the steam as Fluckiger and Powers’ teammate Chris Jones brought up the chase. Just like he did earlier in the week at Cross Vegas, Powers eventually rode away from the very select lead group and set out in a quest for the solo victory. behind him, Johnson chased in second while Trebon fell behind Jones and Fluckiger.

Powers held a 15 second lead over Johnson with one lap remaining, while Fluckiger and Jones chased together. Trebon lagged just behind in fifth. The last loop around the course produced few changes in the final result. Powers topped Johnson for the second time in less than a week. Fluckiger outlasted Jones for third. Ben Berden (Raleigh-Clement) overtook Trebon for fifth.
