Julian Kyer, pictured here at the Scenic Gorge Time Trial of the 2012 Mt. Hood Cycling Classic earlier this month, won the USA Cycling Elite men's time trial Thursday at the national championships in Georgia.

A handful of riders who tackled the recent Mt. Hood Cycling Classic were sprinkled across the podiums during Thursday’s national championship time trials in the United States and Canada.

2012 Mt. Hood women's overall winner Rhae Shaw finished second Thursday in the time trial at the Canadian national championships.

Julian Kyer (Juwi Solar) and Evan Huffman (Cal Giant Berry/Specialized) won the U.S. men’s Elite and U23 races, respectively, while Rhae Shaw (ExergyTWENTY12) finished second to multi-time Olympic medal winner Clara Hughes at the Canadian Championships. Shaw’s teammate Alison Tetrick finished fifth in the U.S. Elite women’s race.

Kyer, who rode to sixth place at Hood’s Scenic Gorge Tim Trial but did not finish the final day’s Three Summits Road Race, set the fastest time of the day on the 30 km nationals course in Georgia at 36:36.7. Huffman, who placed fourth at the Hood time trial and finished fifth overall, set the second-fastest time Thursday at 36:40.7 to win the U23 race in front of Bontrager/Livestrong’s Lawson Craddock and Nathan Brown. Mt. Hood double stage winner Coulton Hartrich (Athletix/GlobalBike) finished ninth.

Tetrick, who finished second on three of Hood’s four stages and grabbed third overall there, rode to a fifth place finish Thursday in Georgia behind Olympic picks Amber Neben and Evelyn Stevens of Specialized-lululemon, followed by Alison Powers (Now and Novartis for MS) and recent Nature Valley Grand Pris winner Carmen Small (Optum Pro Cycling/Kelly Benefit Strategies). Oregon’s Jade Wilcoxson, Small’s teammate, finished 10th, more than two minutes off the winning mark.

Mt. Hood women’s overall winner Shaw, who won Hood’s time trial and both road races, finished second Thursday in Lac Megantic, Quebec, to 2011 Hood runner-up Clara Hughes. Shaw covered the 30 km course 1:40 slower than Hughes for the silver.
