Flu knocks Rathe from 1st cobbled race

Illness has knocked Jacob Rathe from his first start in a professional Belgium cobbled classic. An ill-timed week-long bout with a flu bug that has been spreading through the Garmin-Barracuda team caused directors to scrub Rathe and teammate Micheal Kreder from the original Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne start list and replace them with Alex Rasmussen and Johann Vansummeren, the 2011 Paris-Roubaix winner who also started Saturday’s Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.

Rathe recently began his first season with Garmin-Barracuda at the Tour of Qatar Feb. 5-10 and then hit the two-day Tour Haute Var in France before returning to his home in Girona, Spain for training. His next start could be the UCI 1.1 Le Samyn race in Belgium on Feb. 29 or possibly the UCI 2.1 Three Days of West Flanders March 2-4

Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, a UCI 1.1 race, dates back to 1946. George Hincapie, while riding for the Discovery squad in 2005, is the only U.S. rider to have won the race.

Garmin-Barracuda Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne final start list:
51 Tyler Farrar (USA)
52 Andreas Klier (Ger)
53 Martijn Maaskant (Ned)
54 *Alex Rasmussen (Den)
55 Murilo Antonio Fischer (Bra)
56 *Johan Vansummeren (Bel)
57 Jack Bauer (NZl)
58 S├ębastien Rosseler (Bel)
