Braun, Walle lead Banana Belt series

Mar 17, 2012 by

HAGG LAKE — Matt Braun (Audi) and Brianna Walle (Ironclad Performance Wear) will take leads into the final race of the 2012 Banana Belt Series Sunday. And forecasts call for more cold and wet weather that will once again test the mettle of competitors.

Racers will hit the 11-mile loop around Henry Hagg Lake west of Portland one more time to decide the overall winners. The last race of the series will also mark the beginning of the season-long Oregon Cup, an eight-race series for Cat 1-2 men and Cat 1-2-3 women that ends with the Giro di Portland August 18. Banana Belt #3 kicks off the series, which continues April 7 at the Piece of Cake Road Race.

Braun holds a one-point lead over David Zimbelman in the Cat 1-2 men’ race. Both riders escaped the field in each of the first two weeks in successful breakaways with Ryan Carlson, who sits third overall at five points behind Braun. Week#2 winner Colby Wait-Molyneux sits fourth, 10 points behind the leader.

Walle’s wins in both of the Cat 1-2 women’s races so far have given her a substantial 22-point lead in the category. Gentle Lovers’ Erin Playman is second, with Lindsay Fox (Athletes Lounge) in third.
