Trebon, Nash win USGP#3
FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Ryan Trebon (LTS/Felt) reclaimed his U.S. Gran Prix of Cyclocross overall lead Saturday with a dominant win during first race of the series’ second weekend, the New Belgium Cup in Fort Collins, Colo.
Trebon previously won the first race of the series Sept. 24 in Sun Prairie, Wisc., and placed third the next day during race #2 won by former world champion Bart Wellens.
Wet weather in the low-40s made for challenging conditions on the slick, twisting, technical course in the shadows of the Rocky Mountains. Bike handling skills were the order of the day, helping several northwest riders crack the top end of the results.
Trebon and Jeremy Powers (Rapha/Focus) powered off the front and found themselves being chased by Geoff Kabush (Maxxis/Rocky Mountain), Troy Wells (Cliff Bar) and Jamey Driscoll (Cannondale/CyclocrossWorld.com) about halfway through the 60-minute race. With three to go, Trebon led through the start finish with Powers right on his wheel but then opened up a large gap during the lap. Powers slipped back into third behind Kabush with one to go, while Driscoll rode into fourth and U23 revelation Yannick Eckmann (Pearlizumi/Shimano) grabbed 5th. Last year’s Cross Crusade overall winner Chris Sheppard (Rocky Mountain Factory) finished 6th. Last week’s Cross Crusade winner Sean Babcock (Kona) started 80th and finished in 14th, just behind Tim Johnson (Cannondale/CyclocrossWorld.com).
BUTLER 6TH IN WOMEN’S RACE
The women’s race quickly boiled down to a contest between U.S. national champion Katie Compton and Czech national champion Katerina Nash, with Compton leading most of the way until Compton went down in a corner about 30 minutes into the 45-minute event. Once Compton went down Nash was able to build an insurmountable lead and take the win. Nash’s teammate Georgia Gould finished third. Portland’s Sue Butler (River City Bicycles/Ridley) got off to a slow start in Colorado after winning the cross Crusade opener last weekend at Alpenrose but fought through a tough field for sixth.
The USGP continues with race #4 Sunday in Fort Collins.
