Trebon, Morin win at David Douglas
VANCOUVER, Wash. — Ryan Trebon (LTS/Felt) and Rhonda Morin (Sorella Forte) kicked off the Oregon cyclocross season Saturday with wins in the men’s and women’s A races of the Grand Prix Molly Cameron #1 at David Douglas Park.
The course across the Columbia River in Vancouver included grass sections with a long tailwind straightaway and twisting curves that meandered though the ballfields and park grounds.
The south end of the course, however, plunged into some soft, powdery singletrack with harrowing descents and tough, tight climbs. The A men and women raced at 1 p.m. with the Masters A men.
Trebon, on top of a stealth black ride from new bike sponsor Felt and flying his new bright-green-trimmed black kit, left little doubt who was the class of the men’s A field. The 6’5″ former national champion opened up a huge gap on the first lap of the fast, technical course and never looked back. His biggest worry was fighting his way through lapped traffic from the Masters A and Women’s A fields. In fact, the Bend pro lapped nearly every rider in the event.
Donald Reeb and Steve Carwile (www.EvanPlews.com) fought back and forth for second place, with Reeb taking the early advantage before Carwile took back the lead by the finish. Reeb held on for third. Series namesake Molly Cameron (MetaFilter) finished fourth. Second Ascent’s Dave Davis finished fifth.
Morin battles Playman and Watson for the win
Morin required a few more laps than her male counterpart to establish her advantage after battling Gentle Lovers’ Erin Playman and Embrocation Cycling Journal’s Abby Watson at the beginning of the race. But the Sorella Forte rider built a big enough lead by the finish that she ended up doing one more lap than her fellow women competitors, who came through the line after Trebon finished.
