PORTLAND — Erik Tonkin (Kona) rode away with the men’s A win Sunday at the 6th Annual Kruger’s Crossing on Sauvies Island, the third time in just three tries that he’s won the race. Brooke McDermid (bicycleattorney.com) capitalized on her post-Cross Crusade form to take the women’s A win.

Nearly 700 riders in 20 Categories raced throughout the clear, crisp day, although a well-saturated week leading up to the race ensured there was plenty of mud to go around.

Tonkin, whose only other start in a cyclocross race this season came on Oct. 16 when he finished 32nd at Cross Crusade 3# Heron Lakes, is not unfamiliar with winning at Kruger’s Farm. He took the inaugural race in 2006 followed by a win on his next attempt in 2009 and then again this year on his third try. But the Kona rider had to get past challenges from Buy Local Cycling’s Ross Brody and Corsa Concepts’ Shannon Skerritt before he could make it a perfect three for three on the island about 10 miles northwest of Portland. Tonkin slipped off the front over seven laps and finished in 56:56, just 31 seconds ahead of Brody. Skerritt came in 1:14 down for third, while Michael Gallagher (Corsa Concepts) and Eric Sheagley (Veloce Racing) rounded out the top five.

In the women’s A race, McDermid, who finished eighth overall this season at the Cross Crusade, rode one more lap than her competitors on her way to grabbing her first win at Krugers. McDermid, covering six laps of the course, finished ahead of Beth Orton (Team S&M les Femmes) and Megan Schubel (Sweetpea Ladies Auxiliary). Jade Koide (Team Beer) and Kim Matheson (Team S+M les Femmes) finished fourth and fifth.
