PORTLAND –  Jacob Rathe has parlayed his 2011 success with Slipstream Sports’ Chipotle Development Team into a spot on the Garmin-Cervelo mothership next year.

The 20-year-old from Portland recently signed a contract with Slipstream to race in Europe next season on the UCI World Tour team run by Jonathan Vaughters. Earlier this summer Garmin-Cervelo took the top team prize in the Tour de France after winning four stages and holding the yellow jersey for much of the first week. Garmin-Cervelo is also home to Tour stage winner Tyler Farrar of Wenatchee, Wash.

Rathe is currently competing with the Chipotle squad at the 10-stage Volta a Portugal, where he won the 109-mile stage 9 road race Sunday from a breakaway group of nine riders that finished 30 seconds ahead of the field.

Rathe traces his racing history back to the Beaverton Bicycle Club. From there he moved to the CMG Racing program of U.S. Cycling Hall of Fame inductee Butch Martin, then the Jelly Belly Pro Team and currently the Chipotle squad. Along the way, he has piled up international results with the USA Cycling Development Program’s Junior and U23 national teams.

Earlier this spring Rathe won a stage of the Rutas de America and finished third in the prestigious Paris-Roubaix U23 race. Last month in Bend he finished sixth in the Cascade Cycling Classic stage 4 criterium after bridging to a group of three with two others and then lapping the field before eventually flatting on the last corner of the last lap. Rathe finished 21st overall in the Bend race, won by Francisco Mancebo (Realcyclist.com), the former Spanish national champion climbing specialist who twice made the top 10 of the Tour de France. Rathe also helped his teammates earn the polka dot climber’s jersey, the green sprinter’s jersey and the best young rider’s jersey for Lachlan Morton’s second-place overall finish.
