PORTLAND — The traditional weekly races at Portland International Raceway start another season this week with the River City Bicycles Tuesday Nighter. Tuesday night racing on the auto road track near Delta Park is a decades old institution in Oregon racing that doesn’t show any signs of fading.

New this year is an earlier start for the Cat 1/2/3 group, which will roll onto the tarmac at 6:35 p.m. The Cat 3/4 field begins at 6:30, and the Cat 4/5 race starts things off at 6:05.

The two mile closed loop offers a chance for weekday fun and a place to practice attacks, breakaways and pursuits for more prestigious stage races and weekend one-day events. The evening contests are points races, with the winners decided by a combination of points awarded for hot-spot sprints and the finish. Series leaders are crowned every month in each of the categories.

Monday Night PIR for Women and Masters racers begins in two weeks on April 18.
