NWTA Trail Fest this weekend
PORTLAND — The Northwest Trail Alliance’s 2011 Trail Fest is set to invade Portland this weekend with a movie premiere, VIP gathering, advocacy discussions, work parties and great rides.
The schedule of events starts Thursday with the Portland premiere of Pedal Driven, a documentary chronicling the battles between “free riders” and Forest Service rangers on government land outside of Leavenworth, Washington. The movie is playing from 7-9 p.m. at the historic Hollywood Theater, located at 4122 N.E. Sandy Blvd. Admission is $15. Children 12 and under free. (Proceeds go to the NWTA Earn Your Dirt trail program).
Portland Trail Fest will once again officially kick off Friday night with a party for VIPs and NWTA members from 7-10 p.m. at Chris King Precision Components, 2801 NW Nela St. The event is free and will feature a presentation on the The Northwest Trail Alliance. VIPs and members will get an email invitation. The evening will also include beer provided by Hopworks Urban Brewery and bike parking provided by Bikeracker.
The real work begins Saturday west of Portland with the NWTA Trail Fest Work Party at Stub Stewart State Park, which is the only state park in Oregon that has mountain bike specific trails. The work party begins at 9 a.m. and lasts until 1 p.m. Bring work gloves and dress for the weather. Trail work experience is not necessary. Come and have some fun in the dirt. NWTA will provide burgers and snacks.
The NWTA Trail Fest Swap Meet runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at 1300 N. River St. in Portland. (This is right under the Fremont Bridge on the east side). Entry is $5 from 10-1 and $2 from 1-3. All proceeds go to NWTA and thus to the trails you love to ride, so be cool and don’t try and sneak in.
Sunday is the extra fun day for the 2011 Trail Fest with two Rides of Spring planned near the Portland area. The Gravity Assist Ride in the Tillamook forest starts at 8:30 a.m. This advanced ride is a DH practice race course. The top bit is a short section of fire road that turns into single track. The route is steeper on upper half with roots and is very technical. The middle section includes several jumps. Some short mandatory drops. Swoopy sections with G outs. The XC Ride will take place from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on trails around the Gales Creek Campground in the Tillamook State Forest. This intermediate-to-advanced ride heads up Gales Creek Trail to Storey Burn TH with the option to continue on Gravelle Bros Trail, back down Storey Burn Trail returning to Gales Creek Campground. The initial climb up Gales Creek Trail is steep and technical, so plan accordingly.
The weekend wraps up with a post-ride celebration.
