Monday PIR starts tonight
PORTLAND — Monday night racing for women and Masters men takes flight at Portland International Raceway tonight as Team Oregon/Laurelwood Brewing presents the 2011 Monday Night PIR series, which runs from now through the end of August.
Catering to entry-level racers, women and Masters, the Monday night series takes place on the same 2-mile auto road race tarmac as the long-running Tuesday night series for Cat 1/2/3/4/5 racing.
Monday night categories include separate races for Novice women and an “open” race for women of all skill levels and ages. Men’s racing is restricted to Masters who are 30 or older. Three categories for men include Novice, Cat 1/2/3 and Cat 4/5.
The smooth, wide-open pavement on a closed, car-free course provides a great place for people new to the sport to ease into racing. Clinics before each week’s competitions also help riders make the step from interest to participation.
Returning for 2011 are the Catselli-designed leaders jerseys that will be awarded to each month’s winners. Points are accumulated each night toward the monthly competitions.

The clinics will cover bike racing skills and strategies geared toward novices and beginners and will be led by coaches from Upper Echelon Fitness and other experienced racers. Clinics for men are the first Monday of each month. Women’s clinics will be the second Monday of each month. Clinics are open to everyone on all other Mondays. Clinics will start at 5:45 prior to the first race of the evening. Racing begins at 6:15 for Novice men and 6:20 for Novice women. Coaching will continue during the race, followed by regrouping after the race for a debriefing. You don’t have to race (or pay race registration fee) to take part in the clinic. Cost is $10 per clinic.
