Masters crit champs decided Friday

BEND — For the first day since the 2011 USA Cycling Masters Road National Championships started on Wednesday, no Oregon riders managed to bring home a gold medal. But Bend’s Kyle Wuepper came up with the best Oregon result of the day, winning the field sprint for second in the Men’s 35-39 race after winner Mike Olheiser, a mulitiple Elite criterium and time trial national champion from Alabama, soloed away with 15 laps to go.

Bend’s Eric Martin followed Wuepper by earning a bronze medal in the Men’s 45-49 race, while Portland’s Mindy Simmons grabbed fourth in the Women’s 35-39 contest. Steven Wright finished fifth in the Men’s 40-44 event, which saw more than 100 enties at the start.

In the Men’s 30-34 race, Stephen Bedford made it into a seven-man breakaway that established a large lead with about 20 laps remaining of the 50-lap event before taking fifth in the seven-up sprint for the championship.

The USAC Masters Road National Championships, which will crown more than 60 champions through its duration as well as a Best All-Around Rider and Best All-Around Team, continues Saturday with the first of two days of road races. Women 40-and-over, men 60-and-over and tandems will contest the Awbrey Butte course Saturday. Everyone else battles it out on the same course Sunday.
