Luelling, Morin win at David Douglas
By Matt Haughey
VANCOUVER — What started as a chilly, foggy morning gave way to a sunny day of racing at David Douglas park for the second time in the GPMC series. This course was similar to the previous outing with one big change: the second run-up was brutally long and steep, sapping energy from racers lap by lap. Overall, turnout was a bit on the low side given the competing Cross Crusade weekend going on in Bend, but there was plenty of good racing to be had.
In the Women’s A race, all four riders stuck together for the first lap until GPMC series leader and Sorella Forte racer Rhonda Morin and Upper Echelon Fitness’ Susan Peithman began to pull away. After a couple laps Morin maintained a 10 second gap that eventually grew, with Morin taking her third first place win in the GPMC series and
pulling farther ahead in the series standings.
The Men’s A race broke apart right from the start, with Portland Bicycle Studio’s Brett Luelling taking an early lead that went unchallenged. Several laps into the race his gap on the field was over 30 seconds and he continued to pull away to the end.
The GPMC series next stop is Nov. 5 on the flat and fast Apple Core Cross course near Salem.
