PORTLAND — Sue Butler (River City Bicycles) and Steven Beardsley (Gentle Lovers) both won bunch sprints to take the penultimate week of the six-race Wednesday night Mt. Tabor Series.

Butler duplicated her week #1 win, this time taking the sprint from a select group of about 10 riders that developed over the eight-lap race. Series leader Anne Usher Davis (Upper Echelon Fitness) added to her commanding overall lead with a second-place finish. Danbury Audi’s Hilary Billington, now recovered from a crash at the Nature Valley Grand Prix in Minnesota last month, crossed the line third after launching several unsuccessful escape attempts during the race. Mindy Simmons (Guinness Cycling) was fourth, followed by Lindsay Fox (Athletes Lounge) in fifth.

Various solo and dual breakaways animated the Senior men’s race, but nothing was able to stick for more than a prime before the hungry field started chipping away at any small advantage escapees may have accumulated. Gabe Varela (Yahoo! Cycling) had the most luck with several tries off the front. Ryan Carlson (Cyclepath), Jonathan McCoy (Ironclad performance Wear) and Brendan Treacy (Team Oregon/Laurelwood Brewing) all attempted to break the field’s grip.

Gentle Lovers brought numbers to help protect Sam Nicoletti’s series lead, but when a mechanical knocked him out of the race early in the 15-lap event, the pink and purple team’s plans changed quickly. When a small group gained a tiny advantage with about two to go, team sprinter Steven Beardsley bridged up and then sat in waiting for the finale, where he followed Ironclad rider Trevor Spahr’s move near the bottom of the final climb and then passed him in the curves approaching the finish to take his first win of the 2011 series. Spahr got the second spot, with Treacy third and Carlson fourth. Carlson’s Cyclepath teammate Aaron Sander finished fifth.

Beardlsey’s win denied maximum points to teammate Nicoletti’s rivals in the series competition, which Nicoletti still leads by seven points over Treacy despite missing tonight’s finish. (Final series standings will be based on the best five of six races).

The “Velo on the Volcano” series concludes next Wednesday, July 13, with the week#6 races.
