WINDY GAP, Ireland — Austin Boswell finished the Junior 2011 Tour of Ireland fourth overall behind teammate Tom Awrona and two South African riders after wearing the race leader’s jersey for two stages. The 17-year-old Bend rider’s Hot Tubes Development Team took the three of the top five spots overall with Yannick Eckmann of Colorado taking the fifth overall spot.

Boswell briefly wore the yellow jersey after finishing second on the stage 2 road race. He defended his jersey on stage 3, finishing one second behind the leader for eighth place. Awrona took over the race lead after winning the 99km stage 4 race around the island of Achill, where Boswell finished in the second chase group. He slipped into second overall, 1:11 behind his teammate. Eckmann moved into third overall. The Hot Tubes trio maintained its GC places after the 88 km stage 5 road race, finishing in the first chase group 30 seconds behind winner Chris Wilkinson of Great Britain.

Sunday’s road race took place under harsh weather conditions as heavy rain and winds battered the riders over the 43 mile course from Castlebar to Windy Gap. Irish rider Darragh Zaidan made a solo breakaway to take the win. South African rides Kevin Patten and James Fourie, who had started the day fourth and sixth overall, made a late race move to finish second and third, gaining enough time to push Boswell Boswell and Eckmann from their GC spots into fourth and fifth but preserving Awrona’s win by 45 seconds.
