Local pro Hilary Billington (Danbury Audi) was one of 39 riders who piled up during a massive crash in the finale of stage 5 at the Nature Valley Grand Prix in Minnesota. Billington was one of four riders who were placed in neck braces, on backboards, and taken by ambulance to a local hospital.

Although she landed directly on her face, she fortunately did not suffer a concussion, according to her husband Scott Powell. She may have a fractured cheek bone, and she has some tremendous bruising on her right leg that prevented her from starting Saturday. Powell said Billington was upset about having to drop out of Nature Valley, as her team believed their sprinter Jenn Purcel was in with a shout at the criterium on Friday after they weren’t able to pull out a win at Thursday’s road race, where they had placed four riders, including Billington, in the final split of less than 30 riders.

Billington is currently resting at her father’s home in N. Carolina, where she’s prepping for this weekend’s criterium and road race at the USA Cycling Road Nationals in Augusta, GA. Billington and her Danbury Audi team hope to hit the podium this weekend.
