HENRY HAGG LAKE — Experience gained the upper hand Sunday at Banana Belt #3 when veteran riders Donald Reeb (HP Chiropractic) and Sublime Sublimity winner Ryan Carlson (Cyclepath) joined relative newcomer Galen Mittermann (Bicycleway.com) in a successful three-rider break with 2.5 laps to go.

The HP Chiro and Cyclepath riders eventually jettisoned Mittermann just before the finish, then Reeb out-kicked Carlson at the line for the win.

“Those guys were driving it, and I started to feel the pressure,” Mittermann said of the break, which gained two minutes on the field in just one lap. “Those guys are strong and they were really punching it. On the last lap Carlson hit it and Reeb went with him, and they just blew my doors off on that last hill.”

Series leaders Steven Beardsley, who entered the day leading a trio of riders by eight points, won a hot spot sprint and finished fifth on the day to preserve the overall win. Beardsley’s combination of hot spot sprints with a win at race #1, a ninth-place finish at week #2 and fifth Sunday was enough to finish ahead of Jelly Belly/Kenda’s Jacob Rathe and Brad Gebhard (Team Old School) in the overall competition.

Sunday’s opportunistic escapees, none of whom were in the hunt for the overall series win, benefited from their unassuming move. Beardsley said the first he heard of the breakaway it was more than two minutes up the road.

“It was a sneaky break that’s for sure,” said the track and sprint specialist who is currently aiming his season toward the National Elite Road and Criterium Championships in Bend this coming June.

Tyrrell sweeps Cat 3 Women’s series
Leia Tyrrell (CAPA Cycling) pulled off the Banana Belt hat trick, taking all three races and running away with a brand new Fuji bicycle courtesy of series sponsor Olson’s Bicycles in Forest Grove. Tyrrell finished second in the combined Women’s Cat 1/2/3 race to Veloforma’s Alice Pennington, but she was first across the line in the in the separately scored Cat 3 event. Tyrrell went on to win field sprints in weeks #2 and Sunday to build a commanding series lead. Hammer Velo’s Mindy Simmons finished second at race #1, fourth at race #2 and second Sunday for second overall. Veloforma’s Elise Huggins steadily improved from 10th at #1, fifth at #2 and third Sunday to climb into third overall.
