SALEM — Capitol Velo this week launched a new program for junior racers that seeks to offer a friendly and fun introduction to the sport while providing the formal training necessary to succeed. Open to boys and girls 10-16 years old, the Salem-based program will run from February to August and include 10 races, culminating at the Oregon Bicycle Racing Association State Championships in August.

Salem native and professional cyclist Omer Kem will bring his years of and training expertise to the program as director sportif (coach), leading practices each week during the season that will focus on fundamental skills, basic strategies and training progress. Starting in late March / early April, the junior team will have access to additional training rides lead by Capitol Velo team members

Fee for the season-long program is $150, which covers:

• Paid race fees and OBRA membership.
• A training program tailored to their developmental needs.
• One cycling kit (uniform).
• Support at each of the targeted races (from help with registration and pinning numbers to pre-race talks and equipment checks).
• Full benefits of Capitol Velo team membership.

Interested parties have their first chance Thursday evening to attend a mandatory information session where riders (and their parents) will get a chance to meet the coach and learn more about the team. The first meeting will take place at the Beanery Coffee Shop (220 Liberty St. NE, Salem, OR 97301) Thursday night at 6 p.m. The second chance to attend the information session will be Saturday, Jan. 30, at 4 p.m. also at the Beanery Coffee Shop.

Riders interested in joining the team but are in need of bikes or other equipment are encouraged to contact the team. Participation will be capped at 10 riders for the first year in order to ensure that each receives the training and mentoring they need to achieve their personal goals. Racers are free to compete in additional events beyond the 10 races covered by the program. Program fee can be paid in one payment or monthly installments. Scholarships are available.
