2010 Cyclocross Natz will debut longer Bend course

BEND — Organizers of the 2010 USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships Dec. 8-12 in Bend announced plans Thursday for a longer course that will feature some new twists and turns. For the second year in a row the national championships will take place on the route that winds around roads, parks and parking lots near the Deschutes Brewery on the west side of the Deschutes River across from the Old Mill District business and shopping center.

The new nationals course will be similar to last year’s, with a staircase run-up, two barriers and several technical sections. But this year the course will be about 500 yards longer, with three straightaways, three off-camber sections and a ride-over bridge that will also provide spectators an underpass entrance to the infield and beer garden.

The course won’t be the only new feature at this year’s nationals. Unlike last year and prior cyclocross races, the starting position of each race will be determined by racers’ times in an individual cyclocross time trial run one day prior to race day. This time trial will take place at NorthWest Crossings just north of Summit High School, the same area that hosted some of the USA Cycling Road National Championships in June.

• 8am-4pm – Time Trial races in NorthWest Crossing to decide starting positions.
• 8am-5pm – USA Cycling Cyclo-Cross National Championship races
• 6pm-10pm – Cross Culture Bike Art Festival
• 7pm-9pm – Crossing Barriers masters women’s social gathering

Friday, Dec. 10

• 8am-4pm – Time Trials in NorthWest Crossing to decide starting positions
• 8am – 5pm – USA Cycling Cyclo-Cross National Championship races
• 6pm-10pm – Cross Culture Bike Art Festival
• 7pm-9:30pm – Cyclocross film and music at the Tower Theater

Saturday, Dec. 11

Sunday, Dec. 12
