2010 CX Natz: Wendy Williams wins Masters 40-44 race

BEND — Cross Crusade winner Wendy Williams of Portland’s River City Bicycles brought home another national champion’s Jersey Thursday during Day 2 of the USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships in Bend. Racing in the Masters 40-44 category, Williams out-dueled California Giant’s Gina Hall of Orinda, Calif., down the finishing straight to take her second stars-and-stripes jersey. Williams won her first jersey in 2008 by taking the 35-39 title.

Other Oregon riders in the top 10 include Bend’s Becky Bjork in sixth, Brenna Lopez-Otero in eighth and Karen Oppenheimer in ninth.
An Oregonian hit the top step of the podium in the men’s Singlespeed race as well, with pro mountain biker Adam Craig taking the first-ever SS national title in a pair of denim shorts. Bend’s Brennan Wodtli finished fifth. Cody Peterson was right behind in sixth. John Rollert rounded out the top 10.
Oregon riders were sprinkled throughout the top 10 of most races. Bend’s Karen Kenlan finished fifth in the Masters Women 50-54 race. Portland’s Jan Moss claimed the 10th spot in that race. Gresham’s Rhonda Morin scored a ninth-place finish in the Masters Women 45-49 race. Hillsboro’s Barbara Thiele finished seventh in the women’s 55-59 race, and Flo Leibowitz of Corvallis finished second in the women’s 60-64 event.
For the men, Bend’s Don Leet finished sixth in the Masters 60-64 race. Portland’s Ron Strasser notched a ninth-place finish in that race, one spot ahead of Eugene’s Ken Rodgers. Wilsonville’s Russell Speirn finished sixth in the 65-69 event.
Off-road legend Ned Overend of Colorado won the Masters Men 55-59 race. Portland’s Evan Griffith was seventh. Steve Yenne of Salem finished ninth.
